Preset filters *what?* – Light Room/Snapseed – Emily Johnson Project 4- Module 3- Class #2

The article I featured in this review was called “Custom Photo Filters Are the New Instagram Gold Mine“. I chose to also include this information about presets in my photo app review because it was something that I was genuinely curious about and I considered using it until I found out that Light Room costs $10/month 😦

I liked this article because it explained exactly what “instagram presets” were, and why people are using them. I think that whoever thought of selling their editing tips and packages is an absolute genius. For only about $3-$10 you can get a single preset or a pack of presets. So, what *exactly* are presets? Well according to this article presets are;

Presets are custom filters applied using Adobe Lightroom, a photo-editing tool. Influencers run all their photos through a specific preset in order to cultivate an aesthetic and make their feed look cohesive

Taylor Lorenz (The Atlantic)

Influencers, such ad Maddy Corbin, whom I featured in this video have taken full advantage of this market and even has an instagram page dedicated to her presets.

Maddy’s real instagram can be found here, and her preset page can be found here.

Diving into the actual app review:

I like snapseed because there are many ways that you can edit a picture. I like to use snapseed more for landscape type pictures because it can highlight scenery rather well. Overall 4/5 stars, I’m not a fan of the way you have to swipe up to get other editing options, such as contrast, brightness, saturation, etc. Another photo editing app (that is also a monthly subscription, or a one time fee of $5.99 for the older version of the app) is called “Face Tune 2” and it is basically photoshop for your phone, but emphasizes more on body and face transformations and edits, rather than landscapes.

Project 4- Module 2- Class 2- Artsy Angles(Photo)- Emily Johnson

I really enjoyed this portion of this project because it forced my to go through all of the 10,000 pictures I have accumulated on my laptop over the course of 5 years. I uploaded my favorite ones to my flickr account, and I’m editing my top 4 of each category (landscape, abstract, and portraits).

I chose to edit the pictures right in flickr because it’s easier than to send them back and forth to my phone to edit them using an app, and potentially losing some quality along the way. Here are some of the before versions of the pictures:

The lesson I read on photzy was called “HOW TO DOCUMENT YOUR BEACH VACATION WITH PANACHE“. I love to take photos of sunsets, and I thought that this lesson could really help me to elevate my sunset instagram game. I’m originally from Long Island and I am lucky enough to be able to see the water every day. The ocean is a big part of my life and I love to photograph it. The sunsets at home are unparalleled. I learned that the horizon doesn’t necessarily have to always be the focal point of a beach photo. The author suggested making the focal point something that may be coming into the frame, like a tree or driftwood. I also learned not to have the horizon at the middle of the picture, but to have it in either the top third or bottom third.

I also read the article from our class’ flipboard account titled “5 Easy Tips For Improving Your Sunset Photography”. I liked this article because it was relevant to what I enjoy to photograph. Tip number 1 explained how to take advantage of the ‘golden hour”, also known as the period of time just before the sun sets and everything has a golden glow to it. Tip number two reminded readers that there are objects and silhouettes to be captured as well as the sun, and gave these pictures as examples.

Tip number three reminded photographers to adjust their aperture to the smallest your lens can achieve. Tip number four suggested using a tripod to reduce shakiness and blur or lens flares. The last tip, number 5, taught readers about composition techniques such as, complementary colors, foregrounds, and reflections.

GFH Module 3 – Emily – Class #2 – This or That”

I shared my game idea with both Christine and Kendra.

They both thought that my game idea was a great idea because a lot of brands have harmful ingredients that we as consumers don’t put much thought into. I always assumed that if a product was for sale then there must have been someone (the FDA) looking into the ingredients, however that is not the case. In researching these products I’ve come across a niche community relating to health and beauty product and babies. A lot of mother’s are talking about how natural products are so much better and less harmful to babies. A large controversy I’ve come across is the ingredients in baby orajel. Apparently the ingredients are extremely harsh, especially for a babies sensitive skin. A lot of mother’s are suggesting holistic alternatives to this product. This blogpost does a really good job at explaining the controversy behind the product. When I told Kendra and Christine about this interesting niche community, they suggested that I also expand my game from not just makeup, but to broaden my products to also include any health related products, especially controversial ones, such as the baby orajel. I think that I will definitely take advantage of this suggestion because I would not have known anything about the baby orajel if it hadn’t been for this project. I will research additional controversial products (ranging from baby to adult usage) and try to incorporate them into my game.

In this podcast Emily, Christine and Kendra review the fabletics, arbonne, and hello fresh subscription box services. We share our opinions and thoughts about these products and list out the pro’s and con’s of each box. Thanks!

Special Shoutout to Tessa for sharing her experiences with Arbonne and similar companies. Be sure to follow her on instagram!

Be sure to also follow Me, Kendra and Christine on our instagrams!!

For this podcast we want to talk about the different subscription box services. These boxes can vary from delivering you healthy food and snacks every month to athlesure clothing. I choose to talk about the company Arobnne and what different subscription box services they offer. Arbonne is a MLM company that prides itself on quality. All products are vegan and free from animal cruelty. Arbonne has products ranging from beauty and makeup to dietary supplements, preworkout drinks and protein powders.

Fab Fit Fun may be one of the most popular, if not the most popular health and wellness/beauty subscription boxes. Fab fit fun gets delivered seasonally. A total of four boxes per year for about $40/box. There are upgrades available as well for an additional charge. Fab Fit Fun promises at least $200 worth of products in each box. Fab Fit Fun prides itself on delivering full size products rather than just trial or travel sizes. This is appealing because it gives the consumer enough product to actually see if they would like to continue to buy it.

Birchbox is another monthly subscription service that sends its subscribers a box of four to five selected samples of makeup, or other beauty related products. The products include skincare items, perfumes, organic based products, and various other cosmetics.

GFH Module 2 – Emily – This or That – Class #2 – Draft 1

This game is a spin off of “Would You Rather” but with the incorporation of a game board. The game cards will have two well known makeup or skincare products that the player has to choose from. The back of the card will have the “better choice” and will either tell the player to advance on the board, or go back, depending on if they got the answer right or not. There will also be some trick questions where players will be asked for example, “Name two brands that are animal cruelty free” and the back of the card will have some potential answers. The point of this game is to advocate that not all brands have your best interest in mind. The FDA only bans so many products in makeup.skincare so we as consumers have to be hyper-aware of what products we use.

This article talks about how when compared to Europe, the US only banned 30 toxic substances from cosmetics whereas Europe banned 1328.

GFH Module 1 – Emily – Class #2 – Healthy Hype

The first game I played was called “2016 National Drug & Alcohol IQ Challenge” and this game was basically a quiz about commonly abused substances, such as alcohol, marijuana, and MDMA. A strength of this game was that it was definitely educational, even I learned something from playing. A weakness of this game was that I think there was an answer that could have potentially two answers. In my Drug Use and Abuse class we learned about SSDS (Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome) which is sudden cardiac arrest resulting from huffing a substance. I chose “dangerously decreased heart rate” and the correct answer for a question relating to the dangers of huffing substances. This choice, according to the quiz, was incorrect. Since this quiz came out in 2016, and E-cigs were not the huge problem they are now an Opportunity for this quiz would be that they are able to incorporate this new epidemic into the new 2018 or 2019 quiz. A threat to this quiz would be that there is a lot of competition when it comes to drug IQ quizzes. With a quick google search I was able to find 29,100,000 results in about 0.84 seconds.

The second game that I played was called “Jimmy’s Thirsty“. This was a true/false questions type quiz and all of the questions pertained to water and how the accurate hydration levels change throughout a lifetime. Overall I thought this game was pretty much common sense, however, I highly doubt that college educated individuals were the target audience for this quiz. Most likely it is targeted to grade school students.

Reflection #3, Johnson, Class 2

I LOVE my apple watch. I like that I can see a text without picking up my phone and that it tracks my activity levels. I also have an app that reminds users to drink water throughout the day. I have the series 1, and that is fine for what I use it for, however I can see the use for cellular data capabilities that the newer models have. What do you think about wearable technology? I think this article is interesting because it shows how the new apple watch releases are effecting APPL stock. I often wonder how accurate is this technology really? The article “Why your fitness tracker could be a waste of money: New research shows the must-have gadgets are often wildly inaccurate by as much as 40 PERCENT” describes how a study found that when several different wearable health tracking technologies were tested for accuracy, they fell short. One tracker called the “Polar Loop“, which isn’t exactly cheap, was wildly inaccurate, it came back with a 40% error rate. The most accurate wearable technology this study found was the “Body Media Core“, with only a 15% error rate. I work double shifts as a CNA on weekends and I ALWAYS wear my watch. I’m always shocked when I read that in just a few days I managed to walk up to 25 miles. Now that I’m reading this article I see how, although the apple watch wasn’t studied, it may too be somewhat inaccurate. I think we all need to take this new technology with a grain of salt, and not get too upset or too attached to the numbers it’s spitting out. This technology is still fairly new and more studies need to be done in order to draw conclusions about all wearable technologies in general.
