Johnson – Title – Class 2 – Podcast – Module 1

I am actually super excited to start this project because I listen to podcasts all the time! I usually listen to them on my drive from school back to Long Island and from home back up to school; especially when I’m driving long distances. They help to keep me awake for some reason. My friends don’t understand how they don’t put me to sleep, but when I listen to a podcast it’s something new and interesting- I’m not just listening to the same songs I’ve already heard a million times. My favorite podcasts to listen to are Reply All by Gimlet Media and Up and Vanished by TenderfootTV.

For this project I listened to the “I Should Start A Podcast” by Anchor. I liked this podcast and I thought it was a good introduction into the world of podcast making. It made me think of things I would not have otherwise given a second look to like picking background music and building an audience. I listened to the “Your Podcasting Questions, Answered” and I liked listening to all the questions that these people had and hearing the advise the host was giving. The host suggested having a segment where listeners would call in with questions or comments and that engagement could cause more people to listen to your podcast. I am also a fan of segments in podcasts, It breaks up whatever the hosts are talking about and it’s a great way to incorporate your audience into the show. In one of my favorite podcasts the audience or one of the hosts finds a niche viral tweet and they ask each other what it is about. This segment is called “yes, yes, no” and 9 out of 10 times at least one person can decode and explain the tweet to the other hosts. My favorite irrelevant piece of knowledge that I’ve gained from this segment is that the word “Buffalo” 8 times in a row is a grammatically correct sentence. Go figure.

The podcasts that I listen to all have a “DJ” whose job it is to create beats and overlay them to the audio of the podcast. These podcasts are all semi-educational, whether it be hearing about a true story, investigating a problem a viewer sent in, or decoding a niche viral tweet I think these podcasts are all unique in what they offer.

Project 2- Module 3- Johnson- Social Media

The social media account I chose to takeover is Facebook.

I chose Facebook because I like that pretty much everyone, no matter their age, has a facebook account.

This page has 171 likes when I tookover

Above are the analytics regarding the Oz Health Tech account when I took it over.

Social Media Influencers seem to be ambassadors of all the new and upcoming brands. For example Tarte Cosmetics routinely sends their ambassadors on trips to tropical locations where they shoot pictures wearing the newest makeup releases. Studies have shown that influencers are significant in increasing the sales of the brand that they represent because of increased levels of “trustworthiness, expertise, similarity and attractiveness dimensions that positively affect consumers’ attitude toward an advertisement and a brand.

This blog, Everyday Health posts about common health issues from the insulin pricing crisis to how to loose weight depending on your body type. I like blogs like this because they don’t just post how to “improve your physique”, they also post about current health issues that are facing society today.

Although Primavera Kitchen isn’t a facebook account, I chose to talk about this account because of their recipes. I look on this page almost daily for inspiration. I love to cook, but the same things get old after a while. I love to learn new recipes, especially her “one pan recipes“, they are amazing and the clean up saves so much time. I’ve come to learn that I like quinoa from this blog, and my mom is constantly asking me “what is the name of that website with the recipes?”, she loves it too. Primavera Kitchen also posts recipes for people who are vegan, vegetarian, keto, low-carb, and whole30.

I like this blog because she is unapologetically honest with her followers. She doesn’t just post her “highlight reel”, she posts about real life and her struggles with working out and trying to stay healthy. Her posts are motivational because they are also realistic and relatable.

This article by published on The Guardian that I found through our Social Media Magazine was really interesting to me because I love to learn via youtube. With over half of students being visual learners, I find that youtube videos are a great supplement to in class lectures. I like to watch Crash Course videos on science because of they way they explain things; they are easy to understand, especially with the animations they use.

I believe social media is a blessing and a curse. The power we have in our hands in unbelievable. I am constantly goolging things and using my phone to make my day run smoother. I even use my smart watch to monitor my activity levels throughout the day and to see approximately how many calories I’m burning when I work out. Check out this “>post post did on facebook about wearable technology. However, on the other hand, the power that these phones have can be detrimental. Social media can exacerbate preexisting mental health issues, such a body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and anxiety disorders. Constantly seeing other people’s “highlight reels” can really weigh on someone who has these such preexisting conditions. It is important that we understand the power these phones have in order to “use their power for good”. I really like how the video below depicts the good and the bad aspects of social media.Pros and Cons of Social Media

I enjoyed using buffer as a social media posting tool. I liked that I didn’t have to make sure I was near my laptop in order to post something. This website made scheduling posts easy and efficient.

Buffer
Facebook via Canva

I also created this post for Facebook using canva.

For this project I took over the Oz Health Tech facebook page. When I first started this page had 171 likes. This page still has 171 likes, but I think this is due to not a lot of young people using facebook anymore. My most loyal liker of posts was actually our HPW Department Chair. I made a total of 7 posts in a 4 day period. The most amount of engagements I received on a post was 17. I think consistency is key when it comes to furthering this or any social media account. People want to see that you are active and posting quality content.

One strategy I used to run this account was the social media posting tool “buffer“. Buffer made it super easy to schedule posts that way I didn’t always have to be online in order to post. I even installed the buffer chrome extension which allowed me to set up a post curation right from the article’s website, rather than have to create the post on the actual buffer website.

Video Games Good for Health?

This article was interesting because I, like many others, thought that video games were bad for your health. What part of sitting for hours on end and binge eating sounds healthy? This article said that first person shooter video games are actually healthy for neural processing and efficiency. I don’t think that I like the idea of games where the object is to kill as many “bad guys” as possible, but I can understand how it could increase brain efficiency and coordination. Next, this article claims that the accruing of point/coins/kills through out a level reinforces kids’ efforts therefore making them more likely to finish the level. This helps to develop the incremental theory of intelligence. I can’t refute the next point the article bring up; it says that video games teach kids how to be more social. I 100% agree with this because a lot of games require cooperation and teamwork in order to accomplish a common goals.

Deep Fakes

In class we learned about a software called “Deep Fakes” where if someone has enough images of a person, then they can make an artificial video of that person; it’s like the ultimate photoshop. What’s even more concerning is that if someone has enough snippets of your voice then a computer can generate, with scary accuracy, a voice that sounds like yours. So now we have the technology to not only show you “doing” something you never actually did, but we also have the technology to show you saying something that never actually came out of your mouth. The first thought that came to my mind when I heard this was what if someone did this to Trump and made him say something that would be bad for our foreign relationship, if you know what I mean…

Healthcare Analytics

As someone who works in the healthcare field, I can see how continuity between departments can be extremely beneficial. Since I’m not working behind the scenes collecting and analyzing data I can’t tell how it’s traditionally done, but implementing systems such as the one created by healthcare data-works seems to improve the quality of services offered by healthcare institutions. In the nursing home that I work in this software could be used to track and supply items that we use on a regular basis. This could cut costs on things that are usually over-ordered and help to keep in stock those items that we never seem to have.

Johnson – Adversity – Class 2 – Motivation- Module 3

During this project I learned how to import and cut audio. I also learned how to add background music and pictures to an audio track. I had difficulties when figuring out how to cut the audio out that I didn’t want in the video. I would have liked to use clips of videos in lieu of just pictures because I feel like thats more interesting, but syncing the audio with the video was extremely difficult and it was also hard to download the actual video itself.

Original Video from Aimee Mullin’s Ted Talk

About Aimee:

Aimee is a record-breaking Paralympic athlete who realized at a very young age how powerful words can be. Her childhood doctor sparked this by calling her a “strong and powerful little girl”. She later picked up a thesaurus and read all of the horrible synonyms under “disabled”. She was appalled. She was determined to speak out about adversity and rather than shield people from adversity, but to prepare them for it. This clip is part of a ted talk. The audio comes through a little quieter than the other two clips. Aimee’s target audience is everyone who has or will ever face adversity. Aimee believes that adversity is so common that instead of hiding from it, we need to be able to take it head on, and be prepared for when it does happen. Aimee believes that sometimes it takes adverse situations in order for people to realize just how strong they are, and to realize what values most to them.

Words spoken in video:

“Disabled, adjective: crippled, helpless, useless, wrecked, lame, mutilated. Antonyms: healthy, strong, capable. I was born into a world that perceived someone like me to have nothing positive whatsoever going for them, when in fact today, I’m celebrated. It’s not just about the words, it’s what we believe about people when we name them. It’s about the values behind the words. Our language effects our thinking and how we view other people. What reality do we want to call into existence, a person who is limited, or a person who is empowered? Everyone has something rare and powerful to offer our society. The human ability to adapt is our greatest asset. People have continually wanted to talk to me about overcoming adversity. Implicit in this phrase is the idea that success and happiness is about emerging on the other side of a challenging experiences unscathed or unmarked, when in fact we are changed; we are marked. Adversity isn’t an obstacle that we need to get around, it’s part of our life. The question isn’t wether or not we are going to meet adversity but how you’re going to meet it. Our responsibility is not simply shielding those we care for from adversity and out desire to protect those we care about by giving them the cold hard truth about the medical prognosis we have to make sure we don’t put the first brick in a wall that will actually disable someone. All you really need is one person to show you the epiphany of your own power and you’re off. Which potential do we want to bring out? The only true disability is a crushed spirit. If instead we can bolster a human spirit to keep hope, to see beauty in themselves and others, then we are truly using our power well.”-Aimee Mullens

The audio quality of this speech is a little echo-ey, but the added background music helps. The intended audience of this speaker is anyone who has a disability, or anyone who has faced adversity.

Apple Health Data used in German murder case“- This article was interesting to me because I read this article with the background information that apple keeps their users data extremely private. In this article’s case apple wasn’t directly requested to hand over the data, a cyber forensics team was brought in to crack the iphone’s PIN code instead. I think that if apple had been asked to hand over the user’s data they would have denied, like they have in the past.

In class we also talked about mental health and how social media apps can affect someones mental health. More and more children and adolescents are being diagnosed with mental illnesses due to unrealistic expectations that social media portrays as normal. This article talks about apps and how they claim to drastically improve someones life, whether it be a cure to an illness, or a “scientifically proven” way to loose weight. These apps are not regulated by the FDA, and therefore have no grounds in making such claims. However, this article also discusses the many positives that apps have, such as medication reminders, and ways to contact licensed therapists with the touch of a button.

This video distinguishes the difference between how the older generation uses and views social media versus the younger generation. 90% of 18-29 year olds are on social media. The speaker notes “the highlight reel”, a collection of best and brightest moments. People see other’s “highlight reels” and compare their own “behind the scenes” to it. Comparing ourselves to others isn’t a new phenomena, however, now it is constant. We can check instagram and twitter any time we’d like, as opposed to when social media wasn’t around; people only had T.V and movies as a medium to make comparisons. When habits such as comparing yourself to others and looking at how many likes they get can turn into a mental illness.

In class we also discussed how wearable technology can affect the way our health insurance companies operate. In class we discussed how data from wearable technology can be sent to health insurance companies to ensure that you are doing everything you need to be in order to stay healthy for fear of increasing the cost of your health insurance. However, I don’t think that this will happen anytime soon. This is a huge invasion of privacy that no one would willingly consent to. On the other hand, I think about that enormous power that the health insurance companies have, and if they lobby correctly and to the right people, this could be a scary reality for Americans. This article writes that people may consent to this extreme invasion of privacy if they already have good health habits, and would receive some type of incentive or discount for their “good behavior”. The healthier a health insurance clients are, they less they have to pay out. This is the only realistic way that I can possibly see people consenting to release this amount of private information.

I love listening to the podcast “Reply All“. They often talk about these types of technological dilemmas, whether it be why we should all be using password managers, or if facebook is actually listening to everything we say, and then selling that data. I find it interesting the way they do some investigative reporting, in one episode one of the hosts actually went to India to investigate a call center that was scamming people into buying unnecessary and fraudulent computer virus protection (Episode 102: Long Distance).

Maysoon Zayid- “I’ve got 99 problems… palsy is just one

Maysoon is an Arabic-American who has CP. She attributes her success to her father, whose catchphrase was “You can do it! Yes you can can!” In this Ted talk she describes her childhood and how she overcame various obstacles that stood in the way of reaching her goal of being on T.V. She soon realized that the T.V industry doesn’t cast disabled persons to act in disabled roles. Her life mission is to change this. This audio is originally from a ted talk with good audio quality. The target audience of this speech is anyone who may be different and feels ostracized for it. Maysoon wants these people to realize that they are not alone and that they too can accomplish their goals. Maysoon is a comedian, so her style uses comedy in order to break down barriers and tackle subjects that may otherwise be uncomfortable to talk about.

Judith Heumann: “Our fight for disability rights- and why we’re not done yet

Judith had polio when she was just three months old, and was in the hospital until she was three years old. Her parents first realization of discrimination was back in their home country of Germany during the holocaust. When people started to treat Judith differently because of her disability they knew, from previous exposure to discrimination, that something had to be done about it. The audio is originally from a ted talk. This clip has good audio. I think the target audience for this speech is anyone who has or is facing obstacles that are standing in the way of a better life. Judith wants people to see if she could accomplish this seemingly impossible task of passing the ADA, then you can also overcome your own personal challenges. Judith is very good at telling a story and making you feel as though you were there with her while she was going through this process.
